Keanu Reeves attended the NY Comic Con where he talked about his upcoming projects:
New York Comic Con has packed in some big names and big events this week, but one of the headline stealers would have to be Keanu Reeves. The 53-year old was out and about promoting his part in the 2017 science-fiction thriller Replicas, yet it would be his role in a number of beloved properties that would take up much of his time with the press.
The first of which would be John Wick: Chapter 3, with the sequel scoring an official release date of May 17, 2019. With everyone from Samuel L. Jackson to Tilda Swinton linked to the blockbuster, as well as a television series spinoff and a mooted crossover with Atomic Blonde, Reeves intimated that the hero might not make it through to title number 4 (if there is one).
With the anti-hero being left in something of a precarious position for John Wick: Chapter 2, Reeves outlined how he and filmmaker Chad Stahelski were working on the screenplay for the third installment. It is a bit obvious to say that a man hunted down by assassins is in trouble, but that must be something else judging by the first two films in the series.
“John Wick – John Wick’s in trouble!” he proclaimed. “So we’ve been working on it and I think we have some good ideas. Yeah, some really good ideas. But John’s in trouble. Hopefully we can start shooting that next year. Chad and I thought it was hard to make a second one. And now we’re like…a third one?!”
Another project that is in the pipeline is Bill & Ted 3, a long awaited sequel to 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Whereas John Wick: Chapter 3 has a date locked in despite a script that is still in the works, this comedy adventure piece is in the opposite scenario.
“We’re trying,” he said. “There’s a script out there. We’re just trying to get it made. Show business is tough. It’s a cautionary tale. They’re supposed to save the world. But when we see them they haven’t saved the world and they’re married and have kids. And they’re playing to nobody. … But they have to write the song… and face the music! Hopefully we’ll make it before I’m 60.”
New York Comic Con has joined with Keanu Reeves, Hollywood and Puerto Rico Filmmakers and Cine.Org to support:
The Puerto Rico Film Friends Relief Fund
This Aid organization will rush urgently needed relief funds directly to those Puerto Ricans in need. With Volunteers on the ground in Puerto Rico, we can quickly identify those in crisis; vette their applications to confirm financial need and get them relief funds in a matter of hours or days – not weeks or months.
The third installment in Lionsgate/Summit’s Keanu Reeves shoot-em-up franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 is locked and loaded to open on May 17, 2019. John Wick: Chapter Two, which opened in early February, was a huge surprise at the winter box office, debuting to $30M and finaling at $92M stateside, $171.5M worldwide.
The first John Wick, though it only made $88.8M at the global B.O., was a huge hit on home entertainment, hence the reason why Lionsgate proceeded with a sequel. To date, both John Wick pics count $260.3M at the worldwide box office.
Currently, John Wick:Chapter 3 is the only film scheduled on its current release date, and precedes Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin from Guy Ritchie which is opening on May 24, as well as Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie.
Chad Stahelski who helmed part 2 and the original 2014 version returns for a third time. Ditto for screenwriter Derek Kolstad who has penned the first two movies.
Great news about the movie Replicas, expecting a release date to be set soon. Here is the first image from the movie:
DEADLINE EXCLUSIVE: The first big deal of the 2017 Toronto Film Festival is closing, with Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios making a commitment $4 million for North American rights to Replicas, the Jeffrey Nachmanoff-directed thriller that stars Keanu Reeves, Alice Eve, Thomas Middleditch and John Ortiz. Reeves plays neuroscientist William Foster, an expert on re-creating the human brain for what he thinks is Alzheimer’s research. He alters his research to replicate his family after they’re killed in a car accident. The script was written by Stephen Hamel and Chad St. John, and Reeves produced the film with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Hamel, Mark Gao, and Luis Riefkohl. The deal calls for a wide release.
The picture isn’t part of the Toronto festival lineup, but was part of a CAA program of screenings of films and promo reels for buyers that was held yesterday. Replicas was screened 11 AM at the Cineplex Varsity. The reaction was immediate as five offers materialized, and CAA and Lotus (which is selling foreign) spent the evening with bidders before Allen emerged victorious.
Allen has been knocking on the door of a big deal for some time. That included a $20 million offer the Nate Parker’s The Birth of A Nation two Sundance Festivals ago, and word over the past few weeks was he made a sight unseen 8-figure offer for the John Curran-directed Chappaquiddick, which premieres Sunday night at Roy Thomson Hall. Entertainment Studios has its own releasing platform after acquiring Freestyle Releasing last year, and the company proved itself with the release of the Mandy Moore shark thriller 47 Meters Down, a $5.5 million budget film that grossed $44 million theatrically.
Replicas will be coming to New York Comic-Con, where clips of the film will be shown, followed by a panel that will feature Reeves and his film making team.
Most world territories have been brokered by Lotus, with UK, Australia and Italy in discussions but still in play.
Swedish Dicks premieres tonight with back-to-back episodes on Pop TV starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Pop’s newest comedy stars Peter Stormare as Ingmar Andersson and Johan Glans as Axel Kruse, playing two Swedes living in Los Angeles who work together as private investigators. Swedish Dicks also features critically acclaimed actor Keanu Reeves playing the role of Tex Johnson.
“Peter brought the idea of perhaps participating in Swedish Dicks and he sent me some materials, the script, and we talked about the idea,” said Reeves. “I thought it was really funny and it was a chance to do some comedy and some drama – some heart and soul.”
The majority of the show focuses on the adventures of Stormare and Glans as they work the streets of LA trying to keep their P.I. business afloat. “I love the relationship to LA, it’s something I wanted to show,” said Stormare. “This [LA] is the town if you shoot comedy – you should shoot it here.”
